Living with ArthritisWednesday, 19 May 2010 Living with Arthritis Arthritis is the inflammation of joints, which results in most sufferers experiencing difficulty in getting around and also experiencing varying levels of pain. According to Arthritis Care over nine million people in the UK have arthritis. There are many things that a person living with arthritis can do to make their life easier: 1. Exercise: The first is to exercise, such as arm chair exercises and gentle swimming. Please see our article on exercising with arthritis for more information. 2. Diet A well balanced diet will help maintain a healthy weight as carrying extra weight will put extra pressure on weight bearing joints such as knees, hips and back. 3. Take Care It is also imperative to reduce further damage to your joints with arthritis, so daily tasks could be carried out in new ways to help protect joints such as: · Spread your tasks throughout the day and do not rush to complete tasks · Take note of which positions make you stiff · Avoid being in one position for a long time, take breaks · Save harder tasks for later in the day when you may feel less stiff · Avoid straining joints by awkward movements 4. Make Changes Small changes to daily tasks can also help protect joints and make the most of your energy · Spread the weight of an object over many joints – use both hands to carry your shopping · Use larger, stronger joints – push doors open with your shoulder rather than your hand · Fix hand rails to the walls · Avoid gripping things too tightly – hold items as loosely as possible or expand your grip with padding. · Rather than lift items try shifting or sliding them. E.g. Sliding pans across the kitchen. · Keep a stool in kitchen to rest · Special garden tools such as kneeling stool, gripping tools will also assist There are many sources of help for people living with arthritis.
